How to choose a home water test

Start by writing the question you want answered. Identify your water source, then review information already available from the supplier, property records or a previous test. A larger panel is not automatically the right panel.

Practical steps

Compare the sample type, included analytes, collection instructions, laboratory process, shipping conditions and report format. Ask whether the test answers your specific question and what follow-up may be needed. For a private well, consult local guidance; EPA recommends routine checks including coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH.Source [1]

Next step

Use the water-testing worksheet. A provider page is an option to investigate, not a universal recommendation.
